Flying into or over dangerous and uninhabited territory should be done with a 406 MHz Beacon as a safety device. The law does not require the use of 406 MHz emergency locator transmitters in aircraft but it is a very good idea to have one. To have the benefits of the 406 MHz beacon and not spend the high cost of converting and installing a 406 MHz ELT in an airplane, many people are buying a personal locator beacon. These small devices can then be carried in the airplane (or anywhere for that matter) and used in an emergency the same way an ELT would be used.
