An elderly man in his 80s is saved by his personal locator beacon when he falls and breaks his hip while hiking. Out for a hike on a trail only 2 miles from his home and in a populated area, he slipped on wet dirt and rocks and subsequently fractured his hip. Unable to move due to pain, he waited for someone to pass by on the trail. After several hours and seeing no one, he decided he could wait no longer as it was starting to get dark. He used his personal locator beacon he purchased two years ago and carries with him at all times to alert rescue crews. In less than an hour after the PLB activation, park rangers and the sheriffs department found him on the side of a heavily sloped trail.
