Canada does not require 406 MHz emergency locator beacons for flight into its airspace. Canada’s equivalent of the USA’s FAA has determined that it needs more information before it will mandate the use of 406 MHz ELTs. The requirement to have 406 MHz ELTs was supposed to be in effect already but due has been but off until an undetermined date. Much of it has to due with a lot of United States registered aircraft flying in and out of Canada. These aircraft are not required under US law to have 406 MHz emergency locator transmitters and they bring a lot of money into Canada’s economy. It may be some time until 406 MHz is required. Until then the good old 121.5 MHz ELTs are still good.
