Hunters use a 406 MHz personal locator beacon to save themselves by alerting rescue services.  Out in the middle of the Rocky Mountains hunting deer, two hunters became snowed in by a freak late spring early summer snow storm.  Unable to negotiate the deep snow that fell over a two day period, the hunters were out of food and did not have the proper gear to last in the frigid temperatures.  The hunters activated their ACR personal locator beacon and were rescued by helicopter in as little as 3 hours they activated the PLB.  The GPS in the personal locator beacon transmitted their exact location via satellite to rescue agencies.
